Vancouver wind storm strikes the HH

We had a really bad wind storm over easter weekend, so bad that it blew a bunch of boat ashore in the bay, and broke a bunch of trees all over the place. well, i wandered over to the hepler hotel, and found this in the front yard!

well, i called up bill and told him to check out his front yard, and to bring a chainsaw.
so, we spent the rest of the afternoon chopping up the broken limbs, and i got to spend some quality time with a chainsaw.

Fun times!

well, today i went by and bill had people trim up the rest of the tree so that the next windstorm doesnt take more branches out. but it looks pretty sad right now. :(

Jaime’s Garden

I offered to help jaime weed her garden a few weeks back. just wanted to post a few pictures of what her current set up looks like, and what we managed to haul out of it carrot wise. all of them were growing overwinter and in the spring here.

at some point i believe they are planning on expanding the plot to the other side of the walkway, for increased garden space, so stay tuned for that!

Worm Composting

So, noa and i wanted to compost more that we did, and being in an apartment its not very easy to do. but luckily vancouver subsidizes all sorts of composting, and so i signed myself and lauren up to take a worm composting class, where you get everything you need and the knowledge to keep them alive. so quite few weekends ago now it feels like, we went to the class one beautiful saturday afternoon. it was outside, and super packed with i think about 40 people who were also attending the class. it was about an hour long, and we learned all sorts of things about worms. then at the end they gave us the bins and supplies we needed.

here is what we got, 2 lids, the bin, bedding material, a book, a little garden utensil, and a bag of red wrigglers!

put the bedding into the bin

and finally, add your pile -o- worms!

so now, we can take our compost and put it to work feedling the worms, and at the end i get some worm castings out of it! wicked!

to start off the first month, we can only feed them 1 Liter of compost a week, but that will grow to 4L a week, which i think will be more than enough for us to be able to compost all our greens!

and, their new home under the bbq
